What this map is
The Definitive Publishing Map is a neutral, current, cited, end-to-end map of book publishing, built to be the one link a writer gets forwarded the moment they decide to publish.
It covers the five routes a book can take to market and the twelve stages every book passes through, scored on cost, time, control, rights, royalties, and trust. It is US and UK focused, with international differences flagged where they matter.
Three rules govern it
Neutral. This is a public resource that requires no signup or payment to use. It compares options evenhandedly and lets the writer choose. Euwyn Goh is identified as its creator and maintainer at Wordsmith, which appears where relevant as one cited tool among alternatives. No provider pays for ranking or placement.
Cited. Every statistic, price, and claim carries its source. There are 58 numbered sources, each one a working link. If a number is on the page, its citation is one click away.
Kept current. The content carries a version number and a last-updated date. Figures change; the map is designed to be re-verified and updated, not written once.
Methodology
Figures are drawn from industry rate surveys, marketplace data, official platform documentation, and publishing-industry reporting, current as of mid-2026. Treat them as planning ranges, not fixed quotes; editing, production, and platform terms vary by genre, length, provider, and change over time. Where rules differ by jurisdiction, the map states the general rule first and labels country-specific figures as examples. A “Checked with source” marker means the cited source directly reviewed the stated factual claim. It applies only to that stated scope and does not imply verification of the rest of the map or endorsement. This map is designed to be updated.
Where a source gives a phrase rather than a number ("a few hundred dollars"), the calculator uses conservative planning bounds and says so in place. Computed figures, like the take-home column in the distribution matrix, apply only the arithmetic the source itself states, and carry a caveat where a platform's mechanics depend on unknowns such as delivery fees or print costs.
