How to find beta readers

A beta reader, in the Editorial Freelancers Association's definitions, reviews a manuscript as a test audience and notes errors, plot problems, inconsistencies, unclear sections, overused tropes, or missing elements. A critique exchange is a different arrangement: you give notes in order to receive notes. A paid manuscript assessment and a sensitivity read are separate services on the EFA rate chart. The pages checked on 9 October 2026 do not rank communities or freelancers, and they do not name one place every writer should look.

The short answer

  1. The EFA defines beta reading, a manuscript evaluation, and sensitivity reading as different services. It does not define the phrase critique partner.[299]
  2. Critique Circle describes a credit exchange. Scribophile describes karma points and says members can meet beta readers there. Neither landing page states a fee.[303][304]
  3. The EFA 2026 chart gives survey medians for paid beta reading, manuscript assessment, and sensitivity reading. The association does not set those rates.[14]
  4. The definitions page still points at a 2023 survey. The numbers below are from the rates page, checked 9 October 2026.[299][14]
  5. Those pages do not state a briefing script, and they do not say what to do when notes conflict.[299][14][303][304]

01

What is a beta reader, a critique partner, a manuscript assessment, or a sensitivity reader?

The EFA definitions page, checked 9 October 2026, says beta readers review manuscripts and offer feedback, identifying errors, plot problems, inconsistencies, or unclear sections. They serve as a test audience for the target readership, and they can flag overused tropes or missing elements. Some have particular expertise in the subject. A manuscript evaluation, in the same page's developmental-editing paragraph, is an overall critique of the content. The other option named there is a revision letter that outlines big-picture issues and suggests how to address them. The page does not say those two deliverables are the same job. Sensitivity readers, on that page, look for statements, portrayals, or perspectives that might offend readers. The page says these reads are generally performed by members of communities other than the author's own, so the reader can comment on language, characterization, and other aspects of the writing. It says sensitivity reading may overlap with authenticity reading, which looks for misrepresentation of a group and is generally done by members of the community referenced in the work. The page does not use the phrase critique partner, and it does not state a fee in the definitions. A reciprocal exchange, where writers comment on one another's drafts, is the arrangement the community pages below describe. It is not an EFA service name.[299]

  • A beta read, in the EFA definition, is a test-audience response. It is not a line edit.
  • A manuscript evaluation is an overall content critique. The page also names a revision letter as a different developmental deliverable.
  • Critique partner is not defined on the EFA page. Do not treat it as a synonym for a paid assessment.

02

Where do writers look for beta readers and critique partners?

This site's beta-readers directory, the critique-exchange task, and the manuscript-assessment task list communities and services. A listing is not a ranking and not a promise that a group will take your manuscript. Two public pages, checked 9 October 2026, describe exchanges in their own words. Critique Circle's landing page says you critique other stories, gain credits, and spend credits to submit your own. Scribophile's homepage says you earn karma points by critiquing, spend them to post work from flash fiction to novels, and that this is how members meet beta readers. Neither page states a membership price. This answer does not fill that gap, and it does not describe communities whose pages were not rechecked that day. A paid beta read, assessment, or sensitivity read is a hire, not a credit in an exchange. The traditional-trade and independent-press answers cover who does this work after a publisher is paying. That is a different question from finding a reader while you still hold the manuscript.[303][304]

  • Start with the kind of note you need: a draft exchange, a full-manuscript reader, or a paid assessment.
  • The two community pages checked here do not state a fee. Confirm the current price on the site before you join.
  • Directory inclusion is not a quality rating.

03

What fees do first-party sources state for beta reading, assessment, and sensitivity reading?

The EFA rates page, checked 9 October 2026, says the 2026 chart's median ranges come from a survey of members from November 2025 through mid-January 2026. Over 1,100 respondents, representing more than a third of the membership, answered about services and rates charged in the 2025 calendar year. Members were told to answer only the questions that applied to their own work, so the number of responses varies by row. The association says it neither sets rates nor advises members what to charge, and that individual rates vary. The table header treats a page as 250 words. On the reading table, beta reading is 0.5 to 0.8 cents a word, 50.00 to 70.00 US dollars an hour, 1.25 to 2.00 US dollars a page, 16.0 to 40.0 pages an hour, a mean project of 208.70 US dollars, and a median project of 150.00 US dollars. Manuscript assessment or evaluation is 1.5 to 1.8 cents a word, 40.00 to 54.00 US dollars an hour, a blank per-page cell, a pages-per-hour cell that reads 0.0 to 0.0, a mean project of 855.56 US dollars, and a median project of 600.00 US dollars. The sensitivity row is 1.2 to 1.5 cents a word, 50.00 to 60.00 US dollars an hour, 20.0 to 30.0 pages an hour, a mean project of 580.00 US dollars, and a median project of 300.00 US dollars. A parent row for sensitivity and authenticity reading, before that split, shows 1.0 to 1.5 cents a word and 14.5 to 22.5 pages an hour, with the hourly and project cells blank. Blank cells are not a zero price. The definitions page still says the rate chart shows medians from the 2023 survey. That sentence is not the 2026 chart. Use the rates page for the figures. These rows are survey medians, not a quote, and not a community membership fee. A studio's own price page is a different document. This answer does not copy one.[14][299]

  • Paid beta reading, median project on that chart: 150.00 US dollars. Mean: 208.70 US dollars.
  • Manuscript assessment, median project: 600.00 US dollars. The per-page cell is blank.
  • Sensitivity reading, median project: 300.00 US dollars. The chart does not state a critique-partner rate.

04

How should you brief beta readers, and what should you do with conflicting notes?

The EFA definitions, the EFA rates page, the Critique Circle landing page, and the Scribophile homepage do not state a briefing script. They also do not say whose note wins when readers disagree, and they do not give a count of how many readers to ask. The closest description of the job is the EFA definition of what a beta reader looks for: errors, plot problems, inconsistencies, unclear sections, overused tropes, missing elements, and, for some readers, subject expertise. A sensitivity read, on that page, is a different question, about language and portrayal, generally from a reader outside the author's own community. Treating every conflicting comment as a required change is not a rule on these pages. Ignoring every comment is not a rule on them either. What the pages do say is which service you are buying or exchanging. A credit on Critique Circle is a critique of a submitted story. A karma point on Scribophile is the same kind of exchange, and the page separately says members may become beta readers. An EFA manuscript-assessment row is a paid evaluation, with the median above. None of those is a promise about how to revise.[299][14][303][304]

  • The cited pages do not state a briefing form. They do state what each service is.
  • Conflicting notes are not resolved by any figure on the rate chart.
  • Match the pass to the question. A sensitivity read is not a substitute for a plot note, and a volunteer crit is not the assessment row.
