How much does it cost to self-publish a book?

How much it costs to self-publish a book is the sum of the lines you actually hire, not one invoice. KDP charges nothing to publish an ebook, paperback, or hardcover. The publishing cost calculator applies the ranges below. A lean third-party estimate is under $1,000. A professional third-party estimate is roughly $2,940 to $5,660. Advertising and a full audiobook sit outside that production envelope. KDP's free publication page, Bowker's ISBN prices, the Copyright Office fee table, and the Amazon Ads FAQ were checked on 14 October 2026. Editing, cover, and software prices are the figures already cited on this map.

The short answer

  1. KDP publication fee: $0 for an ebook, paperback, or hardcover. Print cost is deducted from the royalty. You do not pay for inventory up front.[243][244]
  2. Editing is the large third-party line: about $2,880 for a developmental edit of 80,000 words, about $1,000 to $3,000 for line and copy editing, and about $800 to $1,600 for a proofread.[12][14]
  3. A cover is about $100 to $150 premade or about $625 to $1,250 commissioned, in Reedsy's estimate. Atticus lists $147. Vellum lists $199.99 or $249.99.[15][19][47]
  4. A platform ISBN can be free, with limits. Bowker lists $125 for one US ISBN. Audio and ads are separate from the production envelope.[51][223][29]
  5. Open the cost calculator and turn on only the formats and stages you will launch. The presets are a plan, not a quote from a vendor.[21][39]

What does each line cost?

Read the table as planning ranges, then open the cost calculator and apply only the lines you will buy. The do-it-yourself column is $0 where this map records a free platform or a free tool. The paid column mixes vendor prices with third-party estimates, and each cell says which is which. None of these rows is a fee KDP charges in order to click publish. A ghostwriter is a writing cost, not one of these production lines. Reedsy and Chapter, as third-party estimates, put a full ghostwritten book at about $5,000 to $100,000 or more. That range is not part of the production envelope.[12][19][21][39][40][41][243]

ISBN$0 when a platform supplies one. A free KDP ISBN is for paperback and hardcover only, and only for use on KDP. KDP ebooks do not require an ISBN.Bowker lists $125 for one US ISBN, $295 for ten, $575 for 100, and $1,500 for 1,000. Those prices were on Bowker's page on 14 October 2026.
AudioRoyalty share can have no upfront production fee. ACX's exclusive royalty-share terms pay 25 percent to you and 25 percent to the producer.About $1,000 to $3,000 is a third-party narration estimate, not an ACX price. Pay-for-production pays you 50 percent if exclusive and 30 percent if not. The producer rate is whatever you agree.

  • Required to publish on KDP: no publication fee.
  • Optional paid help: editing, cover, formatting, an ISBN you own, audio, and ads.
  • Keep advertising spend, and a full audiobook, out of the ebook and print total.

02

What do editing and the cover cost?

The large editing and cover lines are third-party estimates, not official platform prices. Reedsy estimates a developmental edit at about $2,880 for 80,000 words, a proofread at about $800 to $1,600, and an editing stack at roughly $3,600 to $8,000. A human line and copy edit is about $1,000 to $3,000 in that Reedsy estimate and in the Editorial Freelancers Association 2026 rate chart, a survey of what members charged in 2025. The association does not set rates. Reedsy estimates a professional cover at about $625 to $1,250 and a premade cover at $100 to $150. The calculator's do-it-yourself cover line is $0. Hiring either job is optional. It is the difference between the lean estimate and the professional estimate. No page here says an editor or a designer is required before KDP will accept a file.[12][14][19][243]

  • Editing figures are third-party estimates from Reedsy, and the line-and-copy range also uses the EFA member survey.
  • Cover figures are third-party estimates from Reedsy.
  • Open the editing and cover answers before you treat a preset as your book.

03

What do formatting and an ISBN cost?

Formatting software has published prices. Atticus lists $147. Vellum lists $199.99 for ebooks and $249.99 for ebooks and print, and Vellum is Mac only. The calculator's do-it-yourself formatting line is Kindle Create or Reedsy Studio at $0. A hired formatter is only a planning bound of a few hundred dollars on this map. It is not a price a vendor has published here. An ISBN is a separate bill. KDP says ebooks do not require an ISBN. A free KDP ISBN is for paperback and hardcover only, it is KDP-only, and the imprint displays as Independently published. Bowker's self-publisher page, checked on 14 October 2026, lists $125 for one US ISBN, $295 for ten, $575 for 100, and $1,500 for 1,000. US copyright registration is not an ISBN. The Copyright Office fee table, checked the same day, lists $45 for an electronic filing by a single author who is the claimant, for one work, not for hire. The standard application is $65. Paper filing is $125.[15][47][48][51][223][231]

  • Atticus and Vellum prices are the vendors' published prices. The hired-formatter bound is not.
  • A free KDP ISBN cannot be used on IngramSpark. An ISBN you own can.
  • Copyright registration is voluntary for the act of publishing on KDP. The office does not say it is a KDP requirement.

04

What do audio and ads cost?

Audio and ads are real bills, and neither belongs inside the ebook and print production envelope. ACX does not publish one price for producing an audiobook. Its exclusive royalty-share terms, version 3.1 dated 26 May 2026, pay the rights holder 25 percent and the producer 25 percent, with nothing stated as an upfront production fee. Pay-for-production pays the rights holder 50 percent if distribution is exclusive and 30 percent if it is not. The per-finished-hour rate, if you pay one, is whatever you and the producer agree. A separate row on this map records professional narration as about $1,000 to $3,000. That range is a third-party estimate from ScribeCount. It is not a price on ACX's royalty pages. Sponsored Products, checked on the Amazon Ads FAQ on 14 October 2026, has no monthly fee. The minimum daily budget is $1.00. You pay when someone clicks. Amazon does not publish a return, a cost per click, or a sales count that means the ads paid for themselves. Leave that spend out of the calculator's production total.[29][82][245][255][256]

  • Royalty share: no published upfront price on the ACX terms cited here.
  • The $1,000 to $3,000 narration range is a third-party estimate, not an ACX price.
  • A first Sponsored Products campaign is a budget you set, not a line in the production estimate.

05

How do you use the cost calculator?

The cost calculator is the place to apply this table to one book. Its presets are publisher-funded at $0 upfront, lean self-publishing under $1,000, professional self-publishing at roughly $2,940 to $5,660, and hybrid at thousands to tens of thousands. The lean and professional presets are the Chapter and Reedsy third-party estimates, not official quotes. Turn stages on or off so a book with no audiobook and no ads does not inherit those lines. Read the editing, cover, formatting, and ISBN answers before you treat a preset as your invoice. The calculator does not price a hybrid contract and it does not replace the ACX terms.[5][11][21][39][256]

  • Start with a preset, then delete every stage you will not buy.
  • Keep advertising spend out of the production total.
  • For audio, read the ACX answer beside the calculator, not instead of the quote from a producer.

06

When is a package a publishing offer instead?

A line-item invoice from an editor, a cover designer, and a formatter is self-publishing. You keep the rights, and each price is a purchase of work. A company that asks you to fund production and also takes exclusive rights is a different offer, even if the quote is broken into the same lines. Writer Beware says a vanity publisher presents itself as the publisher and takes rights exclusively. IBPA says a hybrid claim fits only when every criterion is met. Use the offer checker before you treat that package as a publisher. The calculator cannot audit a contract.[5][211][298]

  • Compare the rights grant with the invoice. Price alone does not tell you who the publisher is.
  • A traditional publisher pays production. An upfront fee changes the model.
  • The checker separates an agent, a publisher that pays, a hybrid, and a paid service.
